ObviousPop’s Best CD's of 2007

The Top 10 CD’s of 2007 and more! Well, this is really a top 20 list but who’s counting?
The year is almost over and it’s time to tally up our favorite albums of ’07. My list is always power pop heavy, but there are a few surprises this year as well.

I have put a little more work into the presentation this year and it’s actually on it’s own page. The link is below. Please note that in the right hand column on the List page there’s a link for each album called “Details.” By clicking on this you’ll open a new window with more information on that album including my comments, a full track listing, larger cover and more.

Please let me know what you think of the list and post your own lists. Each year more and more of you contribute your lists and give me some good feedback and comments on my list. Also, let me know if you like the new list format.

PLEASE NOTE: The ObviousPop Year End Podcast is coming soon! In this next episode of the ObviousPopCast I will count down my 10 favorite songs of the year and more!

New Radiohead Review - In Rainbows

Inrainbows_box

Free or not too free?

--

If you have a blog about music it seems mandatory that you post about the new Radiohead album In Rainbows, and how they have decided to distribute and sell it. You’ve probably already heard about this, but to quickly sum it up for you the story here that everyone is talking about (music blogs, magazines, even non-music news outlets) is that they’re offering the album via download (before it’s even available on disc) and it’s free. Actually, their site has a place to put in a price, meaning you can pay whatever you want, even $0. Most are amazed by this…calling it groundbreaking…everyone from Rolling Stone all the way over to Fox News seem amazed by this even though independent bands have been doing this for a long time now. Many of the bands on MySpace make their music available for download for free. But they aren’t Radiohead, a band that has been on a major label and sold a ton of albums. So yes, there is a story here, but is it that surprising? This is where the industry is headed kids, so get used to it. My first reaction to this news was to question why, and unlike most I immediately assumed it was because the music was bad (the album title sure is). Radiohead has 3 great albums, 2 of those bordering on genius. I’m talking about Pablo Honey, The Bends and OK Computer. The later being one of the most brilliantly groundbreaking albums of the last 20 years. Those were the first three Radiohead albums. Since then they’ve put out one horrible album after another, three un-listenable, meandering, experimental discs of ambient crap. It doesn’t even resemble the same band that put out those first three records. I’m not against experimental music, or even reinvention, only when it is that bad. Admittedly, they had no where to go but down after OK Computer, but no one could have imagined how far they would fall. I personally thought it was a great idea and a smart marketing move to offer this new one as a free download because it took the focus off of the music. That was until I listened to the album. In Rainbows is the first Radiohead album since OK Computer to effectively use melody, song structure and hooks. There are actual songs here. They actually sound like a band again instead of some amateur in his basement with a computer. No, it isn’t as good as the first three, but it’s a close fourth and there are a number of moments where we hear that old Radiohead brilliance. So what did I pay for my download? I’m a collector, and I still love the physical product, so I wanted to support their decision to offer a limited edition box set version. I paid the big bucks and preordered that and got the download for free. If you’re just going to get the download I think anywhere from $1 to $10 is fair, but I would recommend getting the download now for free and buying the CD when it comes out next year so you have the packaging, credits and bonus tracks. That’s a sweet deal and all major, established artists should do it this way.

Crazy Bob's Used Cars

Back in the mid 90's I worked for a record label/distribution company and we always had these boring sales conferences. It was hard to get our sales reps excited about sitting there for hours getting hyped by all the labels on all the new releases, so we were always trying to think of ways to keep it humorous and break the monotony. That's when I decided to shoot some video to play between presentations at the conference...most of it bad enough to be funny...I enlisted the help of my friend Dave Danglis to run camera for this one...enjoy...

Steve Vai Live = Must See

Vai

I am constantly recommending albums on this blog and now it's time to recommend a live show. Not just any live show, but one of the best concerts you will probably see all year. I'm talking about the current Steve Vai tour. I saw him about a year ago with Zappa Plays Zappa and he was nothing short of amazing. Whether or not you're a fan of his work with Zappa or his solo albums, you must, absolutely MUST see him perform live.

He is, in my book, one of the best rock guitarists in history. There's a lot of competition for that title with names like Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Phil Keaggy, Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn in the mix. But Vai is so incredibly unique and such a wild performer, I would put him ahead of almost any other in a live setting.

He is doing a show here in the Twin Cities on September 19th at the State Theatre. I can't wait! Get your tickets now and go!

Here's the flyer for that show: http://obvious.typepad.com/SteveVaiFlyer.pdf

Get tickets and let me know if you can make it to that show. A bunch of us can get together and talk music before the show. If you can't make the trek you can check out Steve's other dates here: http://www.vai.com/News/tourdates.html  ...just make sure you get to one of his shows, it's a must see event.

Sgt. Pepper’s Magical Mystery Headphones

Phonesbeatlelogo

When was the last time you really listened to The Beatles? I’m not talking about a song on a comp or radio. I’m not talking about background listening, I’m talking about entire songs or albums all the way through, doing nothing but listening. It had been a long time since I had actually listened to The Beatles catalog…I mean really listened. Sure, I play select cuts or pop on Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper’s once in awhile but always while doing other things or when preparing for my power pop show/podcast.

--

So, on my last few long distance trips (Austin, Nashville and most recently Atlanta) I’ve been going through the Fab Four’s catalog. I was inspired by the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s and the release of a new Paul McCartney album. I started with the first four releases…enjoyable and familiar and not a lot of surprises. Then, while waiting for my delayed flight to Hotlanta, I decided to go against conventional wisdom and my marriage vows and purchase a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 3 on-ear headphones. You know, the ridiculously expensive “noise canceling” headphones that when on make it impossible to hear the plane engine outside your window exploding into flames, or better yet, make it impossible to hear the flight crew making the announcement that the plane is going down and all electronic devices must be shut off.

--

As it turns out, my headphones-with-a-payment-plan purchase combined with my desire to really dig into The Beatles catalog proved revolutionary.

--

First of all, the on-ear headphones, unlike the complete over the ear (too big and goofy) and the in-ear (can’t find one that will actually stay in my left ear), the Bose on-ears are comfortable and not too big. They sound absolutely amazing. I’m not trying to plug Bose or sell anything here, but my iPod has never sounded better and I’ve used some good headphones in the past (Senhieser, Bose, Sony, etc). So now I’m on the plane with these bad boys on my head, everything tuned out (the crying babies, the guy next to me trying to talk to me about the weather) and I start with Sgt. Pepper’s and then move onto Magical Mystery Tour and then I skim both the Red and Blue compilations. I have never heard some of these sounds before. I’m listening to the vocal tracks, the drums, the strings, the weird clicks and handclaps and the production is just coming alive! Listening to Sgt. Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour back to back with headphones and no interruptions was a near spiritual experience.

--

We all know how powerful music is and how it can move us, but if you are like me and listen to a lot of music, and aren’t just discovering it for the first time, that same magic isn’t always there. Hearing these albums like this has re-awakened that sleeping musical beast inside. From “Fool on a Hill” to “Your Mother Should Know,” I am amazed at the sound and production, not to mention the powerful hooks and melodies. I can actually hear the breath before the vocal line, and can almost hear the quirks in arrangements influencing almost every album that’s come out since then. I am amazed at the things I hear that make me think of my other favorite artists and albums…from 10cc and Cheap Trick to Daniel Amos, Jellyfish and Fountains of Wayne.

--

Sure, we all know how amazing and influential The Beatles are and were, but when is the last time you actually listened to the influence and thought about it? I had gotten to the point where I was tired of hearing the same Beatles songs over and over and preferred listening to the more modern bands they influenced. I had forgotten just how powerful these albums were. So go into debt, mortgage the house (again) or sell your roommates stuff and go get yourself some of these Bose 3 headphones and fire up The Beatles. I’m betting you hear things you’ve never heard before.
